Versailles. Cuban.

One of my all-time favorite Cuban restaurants in southern California is Versailles.  They have several locations, including Encino, Culver City, Los Angeles, and Manhattan Beach.  Previously, I’ve only been to the Culver City and Los Angeles locations which both emitted the homey hole-in-the-wall feel.

During my last trip to southern California, I decided to stop by the Manhattan Beach location since my boyfriend has never had a taste of Versailles, and we wanted to go to the beach.  So off we went in swim gear covered by shorts and tank tops. The Versailles in Manhattan Beach is unlike the others I’ve been to, much classier.  I’m not sure if it’s because it was recently redecorated, or if it’s just a newer location than the others.  Personally, I enjoyed the hole-in-the-wall feel much more.

The food is still pretty good.  They start you off with an awesomely over-the-top-buttered bread.  If you’re watching your weight, don’t…..for at least the one minute it takes to eat this bread.  You can always go to the beach to play volleyball or surf or whatever afterwards if you’re feeling guilty.

For entrees, I ordered the Halibut Lunch Special, which had a citrus-y and also heavily buttered taste.  This was my first time trying the dish, and I enjoyed it enough to order it again in the future.  I was in luck since they made a mistake and gave me a full dinner portion even though I ordered the smaller lunch size.  The plantains have never disappointed me at Versailles.  They’re not too oily, and their sweetness adds depth to a savory dish.  I topped my rice with black beans served separately.

My boyfriend ordered their signature dish, which is a combination of their “famous” chicken and pork chop with rice and plantains or french fries.  The pork that day was really sour, but the other times I’ve ordered the dish the pork was pretty decent.  The chicken can be a little dry at times, but it has good flavor.  The dish is served with garlic sauce and raw onions so make sure you’re a fan of the pungent sort if you decide to order this.

On past visits to Versailles’ other locales, I’ve also tried their Ropa Veija which I didn’t see on their menu during my last visit.  Too bad because it was one of their better dishes.  Their Avocado Salad is just sliced avocados with raw onions, very simple and nothing spectacular as there’s no dressing or even seasoning
